The customer

A national
media house in
two languages.

tamedia.ch ↗

Tamedia is a national Swiss media company and part of TX Group. In its own words, it "shapes the media landscape in German-speaking Switzerland and Romandy with high-quality content and innovative solutions."

The portfolio runs across daily newspapers, weeklies, magazines, and digital platforms — Tages-Anzeiger beside 24 heures, with print operations in Bern, Lausanne, and Zürich. Two editorial languages. Two reader cultures. One business.

By the time BotTalk arrived, reader habits had shifted. Subscription growth was slowing. Premium content needed a reason — beyond text — to stay behind the paywall.

What they were fighting

Three fronts. One deadline.

  1. 01 · Subscriber retention

Premium content needed a reason to feel premium.

Subscription growth was decelerating across the industry. Tamedia needed paywall-side value that wasn't just more text — something readers could lean back into, not just scroll past.

  2. 02 · Scale across languages

24 titles. German and French. One rollout.

Two editorial languages. Two pronunciation systems. Two dozen independent CMSs to wire into a single paywall. Any vendor that couldn't carry both was disqualified at the starting line.

  3. 03 · Time on the clock

Digital habits move faster than enterprise procurement.

The window to test, iterate, and roll out was measured in weeks — not quarters. Anything that needed bespoke integration work per title would have run past the window before it started.

The verdict

Twenty-four titles to ship. Two languages to honour.
Three weeks on the clock. No room for vendor drama.

Tamedia's portfolio runs across German and French Switzerland. BotTalk integrated into the CMS and paywall stack — one rollout pattern, every desk.

What they walked away with

Three wins. One operating layer.

  1. 01

    Premium audio. Behind the paywall.

    A reason to subscribe.

Audio narration shipped as a subscriber-only feature. Tamedia turned a content format into a retention lever — and gave the paywall something new to gate.

    • ~40% listened past 2 min
    • ~6% click-through on player
  2. 02

    24 titles. CMS-deep. Paywall-aware.

    One integration. Every desk.

BotTalk integrated directly into the CMS and paywall systems powering Tages-Anzeiger, 24 heures, and the rest of the Tamedia portfolio. Both editorial languages handled in the same control layer — no per-title bespoke build.

    • DE + FR · one integration
    • 24 titles · one control layer
  3. 03

    Three weeks. POC to production.

    No drama.

From proof-of-concept to full deployment across the portfolio in three weeks. Engagement during the POC beat expectations, and the decision to expand was made before the pilot window even closed.

    • 3 weeks · POC to prod
    • Engagement > expectations

In their own words

Our collaboration with BotTalk has been extremely positive. The rapid deployment and impressive engagement metrics during the POC were beyond our expectations. The support team's proactive approach in resolving technical issues was exemplary. Expanding BotTalk to our other newspapers was an easy decision, and the premium content feature has added significant value for our subscribers.

The rollout

Three weeks. Four moves.

  1. Step 01

    Proof of concept.

First pilot title. Audio shipped against real articles, real readers, real numbers. Engagement clears the bar in days.

  2. Step 02

    CMS & paywall integration.

Direct wiring into Tamedia's CMS and paywall stack. No per-title bespoke build. The control layer carries the difference.

  3. Step 03

    Multilingual rollout.

German titles and French titles in parallel. Tages-Anzeiger, 24 heures, and the rest of the portfolio — same integration, two pronunciation systems.

  4. Step 04

    Premium gate live.

Audio narration ships as a subscriber-only feature. The paywall has a new reason to be one.
